The members of Team Bestmed are absolute champs in competitive cycling (even if we say so ourselves!). We caught up with Chris van Rooyen to learn more about what the team has been up to thus far in 2021, their preparation and wins at the South African National Road Championships, and their donation of old kit to a development team of school children.
Gravel bikes offer the best of both the mountain and road bike worlds. Road bikers now able to choose safer routes and mountain bikers are still able to ride off-road with less risk of injury than on the more technical routes.
Virtual riding is on the decline, so more cyclists are back on the road, which means taking precautions against sun damage and dehydration, especially during the summer months.
It has been a year of ups and downs.
On 22 August, I cycled to Sun City from Pretoria with the Bestmed and TEG Riders. We were all riding in the Cycle for Cansa race on 24 August. I trained hard for that race and knew the course suited me well.
Lionel Scholtz (47) is no stranger to the podium at cycling races. This year, he won double gold, representing Team Bestmed at the SA Road Para cycling C3 and SA TT Race Para cycling C3.
