If you’re struggling with substance abuse and/or addiction, you don’t have to struggle alone. Rehabilitation (rehab) centres provide a safe and comfortable environment where multidisciplinary teams are there to help you. They offer holistic treatment programmes that are personalised to meet your needs. Programmes usually include medical and psychiatric evaluation and treatment, medically supervised detoxification (detox) and stabilisation, the internationally accredited 12 Steps recovery programme, individual and group counselling, occupational and cognitive behavioural therapy, health education, and aftercare.

Medical and psychiatric evaluation and treatment
You need to visit your doctor before you can be admitted into a rehab centre, much like your doctor needs to see you before you go to hospital. Your doctor will determine if you need detox and stabilisation treatment, as well as if you have a co-occurring mental health condition. The healthcare professionals at the rehab centre will then be able to give you effective, personalised care and aftercare, including the correct medication, therapy and support programmes.

Detox and stabilisation
Healthcare professionals will help you to detox safely. They will closely supervise you during the process and treat you for withdrawal. Detox and stabilisation usually takes one to two days, but may take longer, depending on the type of substance abused, for how long it has been abused and the amount of time it takes to stabilise your withdrawal symptoms.

It is very important to note that trying to quit “cold turkey” on your own is not recommended as this could lead to serious health risks. Rather seek professional medical assistance, as described above, which includes aftercare to help with cravings and to address the underlying reasons for substance abuse.

12 Step recovery programme
Whether you turn to drugs and/or alcohol as an escape, or you have become addicted and feel as though you can’t function without them, the 12 Steps recovery programme can help you.

Though the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous created the 12 Steps, other addiction support groups have adapted the steps to their own needs. The 12 Steps, along with mentorship and regular group meetings, are put in place to support and encourage you to seek help, take responsibility, make amends and stay clean.

Individual and group counselling
As substance abuse often stems from personal struggles, these issues are addressed in individual therapy sessions during and after your stay at a centre.

Rehab centres also offer a group therapy programme to support you during recovery and to help you to stay sober. Group therapy could include support groups such as Narcotics Anonymous, as well as group activities such as sports, meditation walks and other recreational activities.

Family therapy and support groups are also offered to equip your family to help you in the recovery process.

Occupational and cognitive behavioural therapy
To help you with any negative effects that substance abuse has on how you feel, think and/or behave, a rehab centre may offer an occupational therapy programme with a qualified therapist. The programme may consist of creative art projects, for example, to help you to express yourself and strengthen your identity.

Cognitive behavioural therapy teaches you important life skills through a variety of activities. This programme helps you to build a strong sense of self and equips you with skills to reintegrate into society, as well as with strategies to prevent relapse.

Health education
To answer any questions you may have about your addiction and help you to live a healthy, sober lifestyle, qualified healthcare professionals may run workshops or talks on various relevant topics.

Aftercare
Once you are discharged from rehab, you are not left to cope on your own. Recovery is a life-long process. Therefore, rehab centres offer aftercare programmes to outpatients, which includes continued individual therapy and support groups.

Bestmed wants to help you
Bestmed’s alcohol and substance abuse care programme provides rehabilitation to struggling members. This benefit is subject to pre-authorisation and will be funded up to a maximum limit or a duration of 21 days, whichever is depleted first.
